1 \tI like a road that leads away to prospects white and fair,
\n2 \tA road that is an ordered road, like a nun\u2019s evening prayer;
\n3 \tBut, best of all, I love a road that leads to God knows where.<\/p>\n
4 \tYou come upon it suddenly \u2013 you cannot seek it out;
\n5 \tIt\u2019s like a secret still unheard and never noised about;
\n6 \tBut when you see it, gone at once is every lurking doubt.<\/p>\n
7 \tIt winds beside some rushing stream where aspens lightly quiver;
\n8 \tIt follows many a broken field by many a shining river;
\n9 \tIt seems to lead you on and on. forever and forever!<\/p>\n
10 \tYou tramp along its dusty way, beneath its shadowy trees,
\n11 \tAnd hear beside you chattering birds or happy booming bees,
\n12 \tAnd all around you golden sounds, the green leaves\u2019 litanies.<\/p>\n
13 \tAnd here\u2019s a hedge, and there\u2019s a cot: and then \u2013 strange, sudden turns \u2013
\n14 \tA dip, a rise, a little glimpse where the red sunset burns;
\n15 \tA bit of sky at evening time, the scent of hidden ferns.<\/p>\n
16 \tA winding road, a loitering road, a finger-mark of God
\n17 \tTraced when the Maker of the world leaned over ways untrod.
\n18 \tSee! Here He smiled His glowing smile, and lo, the golden rod!<\/p>\n
19 \tI like a road that wanders straight; the King\u2019s highway is fair,
\n20 \tAnd lovely are the sheltered lanes that take you here and there;
\n21 \tBut, best of all, I love a road that leads to God knows where.<\/p>\n
