Ugh, that’s one thing I hate when I’m repairing PCs, working on a smoker’s system. I had one that had a layer of yellow gunk over the whole thing, plus little hunks of unburnt tobacco, from a pipe or cigar. I had to take a shower after working on that one.

One place I worked at bought a server from a tattoo parlor. Yeah, there was a good quarter inch of ash inside the case. I’m glad we cleaned it out before we turned it on and had it start blowing that crap around.
My first car was similar. Previously owned by an apparent chain smoker. I finally took apart the whole dashboard to find large deposits of ash in the vent ducts.

Looks like some other computer repair techs beat me to it. I remember once working on a machine that the outside plastic had yellowed from what we assumed was age, then we opened it up. Inside everything was yellow too and there was “tar” from the cigarettes too. It was one of the most disgusting things I had ever seen, and even the other tech, who smoked, started cutting back after that.

Oh, god, fixing a smoker’s computer is the worst experience I’ve ever had with technology. I once opened up the PSU on my ex’s father’s system, to find a fuzzy brown sludge coating EVERYTHING. The fan was blown, the heatsinks were sunk, and he’s lucky that the entire machine wasn’t destroyed.
The computer in question was running WinME, which just added insult to injury.

I’m so fortunate that none of the people I hang out with smokes (anything). Having had to repair the family’s computers before (my father smokes), I will just not stand for smoking around any of my machines in my apartment. Thankfully, that’s not a problem for me.

Yeah, it will turn the system yellow, but is smoke really that much worse for your PS3 than dust/sunlight/dogs chewing on the cords? Just another accessory to sell, and I imagine if smokers cared that much about protecting their electronics they wouldn’t smoke in the house in the first place.

Wow, if smoking does this to your computer stuff, just imagine what your lungs look like – you’re not even directly blowing smoke on computer crap.

I can just imagine an anti-smoking campaign here: the advert starts with views of a normal looking mother board and the CPU fan turning (people start thinking its a computer advert), then its grows yellower in the space of five seconds and the CPU fan struggling to turn. The advert ends with a caption saying “if this is what smoking does do your computer, just imagine what its doing to your lungs”.
